Itinerary

DAY 1: Arrival

DAY 2: Explore Hobart-Salamanca Place-Mt Wellington-Richmond

Visit to Salamanca Market (held every Saturday, from 8.30am to 3pm), one of Australia’s most vibrant and loved outdoor markets. Delight your senses with the sights, sounds and flavours illuminating from the vast array of market stalls and meet the friendly locals who make or grow what they sell.

Next travel by Hobart’s waterfront to the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington. Rising 1270 metres above sea level, experience spectacular views over Hobart and southern Tasmania. You’ll have time to visit the observation shelter and take in panoramic views from the lookouts.

Enjoy a visit to Richmond, a picture-perfect town that tells the story of an early Australian colonial village. Take a stroll down the pretty nineteenth century streets and see the town’s most photographed landmark, the Richmond Bridge. Stop by a local boutique cheese maker to sample some delicious award-winning Tasmanian cheeses.

DAY 3: Hobart - Port Arthur Historic Site-Tasman Peninsula

Head to visit this UNESCO World Heritage-listed Port Arthur historic site (at your own expense)  first, it was one of the earliest convict settlements in Australia back in the 1800s and is now officially Tasmania’s most visited tourist attraction. You'll need a ticket to enter the historic site, which includes a walking tour and a harbour cruise. The site is spread out over gardens and building ruins, so prepare to spend a few hours exploring the grounds and learning about the convict history.

One of the distinguishing features of the Tasman Peninsula is its rugged, rocky coastline. Once you pass Eaglehawk Neck, there are a few stops where you can pull over to see some of the rock formations. Tessellated Pavement is arguably the most famous. The flat rocks here have a naturally formed criss-cross pattern from fractures in the rock, and the tide often leaves pools of water sitting in the rectangles to create a reflective surface, making it popular with photographers at sunset. Some other rock formations to see are Tasman Arch, Devil’s Kitchen, and the Blow Hole.

DAY 4:

Hobart - Bruny Island

Drive 40 minutes south from Hobart to the sleepy seaside town of Kettering. From here you can catch the 20 minute ferry to Bruny Island, and you’ll soon be enjoying nature’s sights, sounds, scents, tastes and textures. It may only be 50 kilometres long, and barely held together by an isthmus, but Bruny Island has more than enough pleasures to fill a day.

Climb the timber stairs to the lookout above the Neck – a narrow, sandy isthmus connecting north and south Bruny Island – to take in 360-degree views over Adventure Bay. Stroll along the white sands of Sandy Bay.

Make a beeline for The Honey Pot roadside honey shop, and get into super-fresh oysters(at your own expense) at Get Shucked, producing the world’s finest oysters in the pure water of Great Bay, don’t miss the raw-milk cheese – a rarity in Australia.
